- Upload your video file - drag it into the box above or click to pick it from your device.
- Choose the spoken language - or leave it on "Auto" and the language is detected for you.
- Click Transcribe - the speech in the video is turned into text, usually within a few minutes.
- Copy or download the text - as TXT, DOCX, PDF, Markdown or JSON, or as SRT/VTT subtitle files for your video.
Nothing to install, and no account needed to try it.
Supported Formats
Video you can upload: MP4, MOV (including iPhone videos), WEBM, MPEG and other common formats. Only the sound is transcribed - the picture is ignored.
Text you get back: plain text (TXT), Word (DOCX), PDF, Markdown, JSON, and subtitle files (SRT, VTT).
Turn a Video Into Subtitles
Download the result as SRT or VTT to get subtitles with a start and end time for every line. Both formats can be uploaded to YouTube as captions, imported into most video editors, and opened in video players such as VLC alongside the video.
Video Files Are Large - Upload Just the Audio
A video file is mostly picture, so it is often many times larger than the same recording as audio only. If your video is over the size limit or uploads slowly, upload only its audio instead - the transcript is exactly the same:
- Zoom: local recordings save a separate audio-only M4A file next to the MP4 - upload that one.
- Other videos: export or convert the video to MP3 or M4A with a video editor or a converter such as VLC, then upload the audio file.
Limitations
- Spoken words only. Text that is shown on screen, and anything else visible in the video, is not included.
- Guest limits. Without an account there is a daily limit and a maximum file size and length. A free account removes the daily limit and allows larger and longer files - see Pricing for the exact numbers.
- Save your transcript. We don't keep a copy (see below), so copy or download it before you leave the page.
Privacy: What Happens to Your Video
Your video file is deleted immediately after it has been transcribed. We don't store your files or your transcripts - the text is sent back only to your browser. The file's name may appear in our hosting provider's technical logs, which are deleted automatically after about a day. See our Privacy Policy for the full details.
Video to Text: Common Questions
Can I transcribe a video recorded on my phone?
Yes. iPhones save videos as MOV and most Android phones as MP4 - both can be uploaded directly. For long recordings, see the tip above about uploading just the audio.
Can I transcribe a meeting or webinar recording?
Yes - upload the recording file, for example the MP4 (or the smaller M4A audio file) that Zoom saves.
Can I transcribe a YouTube video?
Only if you have the video file itself, for example your own video as you uploaded it. Links can't be pasted.
Is the transcript translated?
No. The transcript is in the language that is spoken in the video. Over 100 languages are supported, including English, German, Spanish, French and Russian.
